Miguel Ángel Rojas
Born in 1946 in Bogotá, Colombia.
Miguel Ángel Rojas studied architecture at the Universidad Javeriana and painting at the Universidad Nacional de Bogotá, where he also taught from 1993 to 1997. He participated in the 6th Sydney Biennial, the 16th São Paulo Biennial, and FotoFest in Houston. Through drawing, painting, photography, installation, and video, his work explores sexuality, marginal culture, violence, and the problems associated with drug consumption and production. His photographic account of social violence –determined by the exclusion of marginal groups and minorities from a conservative, intolerant society– incorporates gestural and expressive elements more associated with painting. Individual exhibitions of his work include a show at the Sicardi Gallery in Houston (2006), Objetivo subjetivo at the Museo de Arte del Banco de la and República in Bogotá (2007), and El nuevo dorado at the contemporary art fair ARCO in Madrid (2012).
