« Although it is far from obvious within the context of the prevailing wisdom, I believe that geometrical abstraction is not only informed by, but also even largely anticipated by non-European modalities, or in any case by those of archaic Europe.
[…] If we begin, therefore, from the premise that art is any modification of materials aimed at expressive or symbolic ends, and if we accept that, in non-Western cultures, so-called ornamentation is the central art, we will be faced with a wide spectrum of artistic practices. Practices that, until now, have been overshadowed by a hierarchical Eurocentric conception of the arts. Thus, this different theoretical approach reveals the transformation of what scientific positivism, and the art history it has engendered, has called “geometrical decorations” in a myriad of abstract forms ».
